In May 2017, preservationists had two weeks to rescue the historic 1877 Prince de Liege steam locomotive from the flooded ruins of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Coxton Yard. The locomotive, which hadn’t been on rails for seven years, was raised from the dirt and moved for restoration. Built in Belgium, the Prince de Liege is a rare 0-4-0VBT type, with a vertical boiler and no tender. It worked in Belgium’s coal mines until 1960, then was moved to the U.S. in 1964 and later displayed in Pennsylvania. After being submerged in the 2011 flood, it was repaired in stages and arrived at the Northern Central Railway of York in 2022 for final restoration work and installation of a new boiler. With completion targeted for early 2025, the Prince de Liege will be the oldest operating European-built locomotive in North America and the only operating vertical-boilered locomotive in the U.S., making it a unique attraction.
