1472 Inspection – The Rebuild Initiative of NCR’s Steam Locomotive

Steam locomotives are marvels of engineering and require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. The Federal Railroad Administration requires steam operations to conduct several types of inspections to ensure the safety of the locomotive.

The daily inspection is quick check of all components, including the brakes, lubrication, and water levels.

The 31-day inspection is more in-depth, including a thorough inspection of the boiler and smokebox.

The 92-day inspection involves removing the wheels and axles for a complete inspection and overhaul.

The annual inspection is the most comprehensive, with a complete dismantling of the locomotive for inspection and repairs. This is a costly and time-consuming process but is crucial to ensure the locomotive’s safety and longevity.

Finally, the 1,472-day inspection, also known as the “big one,” involves a complete overhaul and replacement of all worn-out parts. It includes all the tasks of the annual inspection, plus additional checks on the boiler’s integrity and other critical components.

By adhering to these inspection intervals, steam locomotives can continue to operate safely and efficiently for decades, delighting train enthusiasts and preserving an important piece of transportation history.

In April 2024, Northern Central Railway of York Board voted to proceed No. 17 to  an early than expected 1472 inspection. NCR contracted Strasburg Mechanical Rail Services to complete the work. This process will take hundreds of work hours and approximately $375,000. The team is hoping for Fall 2025 return of our beloved No. 17 steam locomotive
