NCR Organization History

From Dream to Steam: The Northern Central Railway of York's Remarkable Journey

The Northern Central Railway of York (NCR) isn’t just a tourist attraction; it’s a living, breathing piece of history, a testament to the dedication and passion of those who brought it to life. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a beloved local treasure, the NCR’s journey is a story worth telling.

A Legacy in Motion

2002-2010
The Spark of an Idea

It all started in 2002 with a vision. Bill Simpson and Reed Anderson dreamed of bringing steam railroading back to York County, a dream that materialized as "Steam into History." By March 2006, the organization was incorporated, laying the groundwork for what was to come. A pivotal moment arrived in March 2010 when the York County Commissioners approved an operational agreement, granting a lease of the rail corridor between New Freedom and Hanover Junction. This green light ignited the construction of a replica 1863 steam locomotive by Kloke Locomotive Works, a symbol of the ambitious project.

2012-2015
The Dawn of Steam

The years that followed saw the steady realization of the dream. In October 2012, passenger coaches #702 and #213 were leased from the Reader Railroad, adding authenticity to the experience. April 2013 marked a significant milestone with the testing and delivery of locomotive #17, the "William H. Simpson." June 1, 2013, was a day of celebration, with the grand opening and dedicatory run from New Freedom to Hanover Junction, with #17 leading the way. The growth continued with the introduction of a four-season passenger coach in July 2014, and the agreement to lease GP10 #7580 in December 2015, expanding the NCR's operational capabilities.

2017-2020
Expanding Horizons and Honoring Legacies

August 2017 saw the NCR's first excursion to Seven Valleys, celebrating the town's 125th anniversary. The next locomotive purchased was GP9 #6076 in August 2018. This purchase replaced the leased GP10 #7580. October 2018 was the dedication of a combination car to D. Reed Anderson, honoring his invaluable contributions. During February 2020 "Steam into History" was rebranded to "Northern Central Railway of York," reflecting the railway's deep connection to the region  and to reflect our expanded locomotive offering. September 2020 saw the launch of S.T.E.A.M. educational programming, extending the NCR's impact beyond recreational rides.

2021-Present
Growth and Innovation

The Northern Central Railway continued its evolution with several key developments. April 2021 saw the debut of the children's book "All Aboard Starts with A!" and the dedication of the "New Freedom" passenger car. By June 2021, excursions expanded to the Howard Tunnel. June 2022 marked the restoration of a vintage gondola for "bike-aboard" trips, followed by rail bike excursions from Brillhart to Seven Valleys in August 2022. November 2022 saw operations begin at the historic New Freedom station.

March 2023 brought the renovated caboose and Jody Anderson Leighty's historic appointment as NCR's president. The railway celebrated its 10th anniversary in June 2023, and Ashley Zimmerman became executive director in October. December 2023 welcomed the "Trail Sisters" coaches. August 2024 saw Jennifer Kreig become the first female Superintendent Operations Manager. September 2024 involved removing #17 for a rebuild with Strasburg Railroad and acquiring GE #32, which became operational that month. #17 was sent to Strasburg in November 2024.

The Northern Central Railway of York is more than just a train ride; it’s a journey through history, a celebration of community, and a testament to the power of vision and perseverance. From its initial concept to its ongoing expansion, the NCR continues to captivate and inspire. Whether you’re a history buff, a train enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique experience, the Northern Central Railway of York has something to offer everyone.
